30 day photo challenge - day 13: from a distance

this is hard to see but if you look in the center of the picture, just above the treeline, you can see a hot air balloon.  it took off next to the house just before sunset.  i'd love to take one of these sunset balloon rides one day and wave at the crazy people taking pictures of my balloon from below.

30 day photo challenge - day 10: something i made

behold my newest alohaneener creation!  i discovered random nicole at one of the renegade handmade craft fairs and signed up for her newsletter.  i love that she includes free  DIY projects like this yoyo necklace.  i went against my initial urge to make it matchy matchy and instead used a variety of colors, patterns, and materials.  i like how it came out.  check out the tutorial below!

DO IT AT HOME CRAFT PROJECT OF THE MONTH:
how to make a yoyo necklace
what you need:
-hand-sewing needle
-thread
-fabric scraps cut into various size circles around 2-5 inches in diameter
-necklace chain & clasp

what to do:

1. hold one fabric circle so the printed side is down
2. fold over about a 1/4 of an inch of the edge of fabric from bottom to top so you can see a bit of the printed side on the back of the fabric
3. thread your needle and do a running stitch (push the needle through the fabric from bottom to top then from top to bottom) repeat the running stitch around the circle
4. once you have sewn around the whole circle, pull the thread until your circle puckers (it will look like a pouch) and knot the tail of the thread from where you started with the tail of the thread with the needle on it.  knot it 2 more times
5. now pull the sides out from the center and flatten the pouch.
6. you have your first yo-yo!
7. repeat this for your other fabric circles until all the fabric circles are yo-yo's
8. design your necklace- pick 3 yo-yo's for the top line and arrange the rest below them in a 'v' pattern
9. once decided how to arrange your yo-yo's, slightly overlap the first two in the top left corner and sew a few stitches on the back side to connect them.
10. now sew the last one in the top row to the first two and sew the remaining yo-yo's together as well, making sure to overlap each one a bit.
11. stitch one end of each side of the chain to the top of each side of the 'v' of your yo-yo collage.
12. put your new necklace on and marvel at your craftiness!

justin took these pictures yesterday while he and the pandi enjoyed the beach.  the second one had me laughing so hard!

30 day photo challenge - day 9: faceless self-portrait

i'm a little disappointed in myself for the lack of creativity with today's topic but i'm a busy bee and it still gets the point across...

tuesday's treasury - run for your life!

30 day photo challenge - day 8: technology

we're surrounded by it!  i'm using it right now to create this post.  sometimes i wonder what we did before cell phones and ipods.  but if i had to choose one thing that i could live without but prefer not to, it would be a microwave.  it's just too convenient!  what one piece of technology would you never want to give up?

30 day photo challenge - day 7: something new

i did it!  it's great when you meet a goal.  this is the end of a lot of hard work, a new running shirt...

33. complete 12 5k's in one year

i did it!  there were a few times when i thought i might not make it due to life happening, but i accomplished this goal.  my last race was the 5K portion of the America's Finest City half-marathon.  it was another lovely run through beautiful balboa park, and my second race without the stroller.  i won't know the official time until later but it was around 33 minutes.  a special thank you to karlie for motivating me during the run!

30 day photo challenge - day 6: childhood memory

i have so many wonderful childhood memories but the tricky part is being able to photograph one.  i went with this picture of tigger because, well, tiggers are wonderful things.  they bounce, they trounce, they flounce AND they pounce!  and i love that winnie the pooh and all of his friends are classics that i get to share with my own kids...

30 day photo challenge - day 4: favorite color

i don't really have a favorite color.  i go through phases where i'll wear a lot of a certain color or color combo.  for instance, when i was in high school, i loved wearing brown.  even my prom dress was chocolate brown.  after college i gravitated towards grey paired with other colors.  now my color of the moment seems to be anything in the teal family, at least as far as my wardrobe is concerned.  but for today's photo, i'm cheating a bit because i honestly don't have a single favorite.  so to represent my fickle tastes, behold...

and no, i am not about to take on a redecorating project.  i saw this on etsy and thought it would be fun to try and re-create.  don't you just love the names they come up with for paints?  florida mango, soulful music, island palm...

30 day photo challenge - day 3: clouds

one of mine and justin's running jokes is for me to point at a cloud and ask if it's a cumulonimbus.  99% of the time it's not, but it's just my favorite type of cloud to say.  i took this on our daily walk to the park.  it's not a cumulonimbus so if you want to see one, look here.

30 day photo challenge

it's not like i need another challenge in my life but i saw this on amy tangerine's blog and couldn't resist!  much like my 30x30 challenge, i make no guarantees that i can post every day but i'll try my hardest... and let me know if you play along!

goodbye gemini

my parents had to put one of our dogs to sleep this past weekend.  gemini was the sweetest, smartest dog.  she sat like a meerkat and loved it when you called her a pretty dog.  my favorite trick was pointing my finger at her and saying bang bang!  she'd flop over dramatically and play dead for a split second before she was up expecting her treat.

gemini was originally my dog.  i got her right after i graduated from college.  she was a rat terrier, a breed i'd never really heard of when i started looking for a dog.  i didn't intend on picking her but when i saw her look up at me with the sweetest little eyes i had to take her home.  whenever you held her she was the sweetest, calmest puppy.  as soon as you set her down to play, she tore around like her butt was on fire, skidding into walls or doors.  it was like having two completely different dogs, so i thought gemini would be a fitting name.

on one of those occasions where she was running like a crazy dog, she ran into some stationary moving boxes and snapped her foreleg.  the vet put a little doggie cast on her leg and told me to keep her from running on it for a few weeks.  have you ever tried to keep a puppy from running?!  well i tried my best but one night i was taking her outside to do her business when she just sprinted away.  all of a sudden i saw her rolling head over heels and yelping in terror.  i was sure she had re-broken her leg so i ran over and scooped  her up on the opposite side.  gemini promptly whipped her head around and bit right into my hand.  i nearly dropped her but then i realized that it wasn't the same leg bothering her.  it was actually her other foreleg.  she did this the night before we were supposed to take an 8 hour drive up the east coast so i could start my new job.  i had to take her to the emergency vet who informed me that she had shattered the elbow of her other leg and that she would require surgery.  he gave me some drugs and told me to get her to the vet as soon as we got to north carolina.  she ended up sitting on a pillow on my lap for most of the drive.

once we got to town, i took her to the nc state vet school in raleigh.  they had a great reputation and being a school, they were a little more affordable.  only a little.  the student vet informed me that she would need surgery on both legs or that she should be put to sleep.  she was only 3 months old so i guess he assumed it would be easy to put a puppy to sleep but i was already in love with her and couldn't imagine putting her down for just having broken legs.  many people pointed out that i could get a new dog for less than that surgery would cost but i didn't care.

after a year in north carolina, i found out i'd have to live in a dorm in texas for 8 months so my parents agreed to let gemini stay with them until i got my next assignment.  during those 8 months, gemini and my dad had a special bond, especially after his boston terrier died.  i knew it would be difficult to take her back.  after texas i found out i would be going to hawaii.  at that time hawaii had one of the strictest/longest quarantines for pets coming into the islands (because they have never had rabies there).  couple that with many rental places not allowing pets and my heavy traveling schedule for work and i knew it would just be better for gemini to stay with my parents.

recently, gemini was inexplicably losing a lot of weight and having bladder issues.  the vet finally said it was time.  it may have been renal cancer.  regardless, gemini is no longer suffering.  she was a good dog, was very loved, and will be missed...

what's cookin' wednesday - summer grilling

summer's rapidly coming to a close and i can't believe i haven't done a post about grilling!  grilling is a summer essential and although we've been doing our fair share, i have not taken any pics.  so instead, i leave you with other people's pictures of some delicious things that we have made, that i will make and/or that i wish i could make...  what are some of your favorite things to throw on the barbie?

what i wore wednesday - inadvertent advertising

usually i prefer to mix and match pieces from various brands/stores so i don't look like a mannequin straight out of one store's window.  i wore this outfit to work this week and halfway through the day i realized that my entire outfit was from old navy!  well, minus the belt and shoes.  at least the pieces came from different seasons.  and these shoes are an amazing find from target.  they are extremely comfortable and they make me taller!  i loved them so much i got them in brown and black.  best part?  they were half off so i got 2 pair for the price of 1!  i love when that happens...

tuesday's treasury - jury duty

i have jury duty today so i thought this justice-inspired treasury was appropriate...
